Attendance

ATTENDANCE

Starting/Ending Times: Middle School students are not to be on campus before 8:15am unless specifically requested by a teacher via a written hall pass, for an activity or study hall in the library, or if they are enrolled in zero-period class. The building is not open until the first bell rings at 8:46 a.m. Until that time, students are to remain in the lunch area. Students are to be in class and ready to work by the time the second bell rings at 8:50 a.m. The school day concludes at 3:35 p.m. Students are to vacate the campus by 3:50 p.m. unless participating in a supervised school activity.

Early Release Wednesdays: Travis Ranch School staff has staff development/Professional Learning Communities time every Wednesday for one hour. Middle school students will be released at 2:28 p.m. every Wednesday.

Daily attendance: Regular attendance is essential to school success. If it is necessary for a student to be absent, the following should occur:

  1. The parent or guardian should call the 24hour attendance hotline at 714-986-7460 as early as possible and give the reason for the absence (see CA State Ed. Code 48205 and 48260 for definitions of unexcused and excused absences)
  2. If no phone call has been received, school personnel will call the parent to verify the student’s absence.
  3. Students whose absence has not been verified by telephone must bring a note, signed by a parent or guardian, explaining the reason for the absence and stating the dates of absence, to the attendance office before 8:40 a.m. Zero-period students may obtain re-admittance notes at 7:45 a.m.
  4. Parents may utilize the Aeries Portal to monitor their student’s attendance, tardies, and grades.

Make Up Work:  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what work you have missed by monitoring teacher websites, checking Aeries, contacting each of your teachers, and/or having a friend collect assignments for you.  Students are held accountable for all class work assigned.  Students are allowed one day for each day of excused absence to complete their make up assignments. On the second day of absence, your parents may call the school by 10:00 a.m. and request homework to be picked up after school on the following day. If a student misses class due to an activity in another class (field trip, performance, leadership activity, etc.), assignments are still due on the designated date.  There is no extension of time.

Absences of 5 days or more: If the student will be away from school on a pre-planned trip, request an Independent Study Contract from the Attendance Clerk at the school site at least two weeks ahead of the planned trip. This enables the school to receive attendance funding while the student is absent, as well as allowing the student opportunity to remain current with assignments.

Absences during the day: Please schedule medical and other appointments for students outside of school hours whenever possible. In order for a student to leave campus while school is in session, the student must have an off-campus pass. In order to obtain an off-campus pass, the student must bring a note, signed by a parent or guardian, to the school attendance office before school. The off-campus pass will be issued and the student will receive a copy to present to their classroom teacher in order to be released from class and meet their parent/guardian in the office at the designated time. A parent or authorized adult will still be required to sign the student out.

In the event of a personal or family emergency, the counseling or attendance office must obtain approval from the parent/guardian or his/her designee before the student may leave the campus. Students will only be released to adults 18 years or older who are authorized on the emergency card. Anyone signing a student out will be required to show picture identification in the form of a driver’s license or state-issued identification card. In addition, students being released from school early must be picked up before 3:00 p.m.

Automated phone call: An automated phone call will be sent daily whenever a student is marked absent two or more periods.  It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to ensure absences are cleared within 48 hours. Unverified absences revert to truancies after 48 hours. Parent/guardians are able to check attendance through the Aeries System, and leave a message on the school attendance line 24 hours a day.
