The parent or guardian should call the 24 hour attendance hotline at (714) 986-7460 option 3 as early as possible and give the reason for the absence.
If no phone call has been received, school personnel will call the parent to verify the student’s absence. Students whose absence has not been verified by telephone must bring a note, signed by a parent or guardian, explaining the reason for the absence and stating the dates of absence.
Absences may only be “excused” if they are a reason stated under California Education Code 48205 (i.e. illness, doctor/dental appointment, religious observance, funeral).
Absences of 5 days or more:
If you are going to be away from school on a pre-planned trip with your family, request an Independent Study Contract from the main office two weeks before you start your trip. The contract contains the following: The student’s name, the dates of absence, the assigned work for the time the student will be out, the parent’s signature, and the Principal’s signature. This way the student will maintain his/her status in class while absent and the school receives attendance funding. To receive credit, the work is due the day the student returns to school.
The California State Department of Health recognizes that schools should be concerned with pupil’s absences in excess of ten (10) days.
When excessive absences are noted, excused or not, the school sends home a district letter. If the absence pattern continues, a School Attendance Review Team meeting (SART) will be held. If the absences continue after the SART meeting, the student and parent/guardian may be referred to S.A.R.B. (School Attendance Board) at Placentia Police Department and/or the Orange County District Attorneys office for further action.
